What is an HRC Hunt Test?

An HRC Hunt test is designed to test the abilities of the hunting retriever in as close to a natural hunting environment as possible.

A hunt test is even more than testing the abilities of the hunting retriever.  It is a time for fellow hunting retriever owners and handlers to come together, swap stories and watch each others dogs work.  Hunt tests are fun events the entire family can enjoy.  Southern Flight prides itself on hosting tests that challenge the retriever and handler but with a focused goal to make sure that all participants, guests and judges have an outstanding experience....

How does the event test the ability of the retriever?  Explain the hunting retriever standard.....

There are three XX???XX levels of testing the retriever can enter.  Many handlers and owners will begin their hunt test careers at the Started level.  The Started level is for younger dogs, retrievers that are new to hunt tests regardless of age, junior and new handlers.  For a new or young handler, the Started level is a great place to begin!  Your nerves will be on edge.  Your dog will do things he or she has never thought of doing before.  You will be amazed at how you and your hunting companion work in tandem to complete the test.  The sound of duck calls and shotgun blasts creates a level of excitement for your hunting buddy that can only be compared to the grandest day of hunting.  Your retriever will think you are the greatest in the world from bringing them to such an event.  (Started tests focus on the natural ability of the hunting dog to retrieve a fallen duck....Control and trainability are not the most important aspects of this test.)  (Sort of like the Disney World for hunting retrievers!)

As the dog (and handler) progress, most will move to the Seasoned level.  Seasoned dogs can really put on a show for judges and spectators!  The Seasoned dog should be able to pick up double marks on land and water as well as retrieve both land and water blinds.  It is important to remember these dogs are normally just getting out of some of the advanced training and the Seasoned test is where they put all of the lessons together to accomplish a set of retrieves under more trying conditions.

The final level in the HRC hunt test events is the Finished level.  Finished dogs are expected to exhibit tremendous natural retrieving ability plus demonstrate excellent trainability and control????  ........
