Building a Finished Retriever Seminar Series Basics of Retriever Training - Part 2 of 3
February 6 - 7, 2016
Join Southern Flight HRC on Saturday and Sunday, February 6-7th, for the second of three great seminars that are designed to give you the tools to build a Finished level hunting retriever. The club is pleased to have pro-trainer Clark Kennington with Kennington Retrievers conduct this seminar series which takes handlers and gun gun dog owners through the steps of building a solid foundation with basic retriever training. He will demonstrate effective training practices to help you teach your young retriever as well as how to re-enforce the lessons.
This seminar builds on the basics that were covered in the first session last year. Starting at noon Saturday, Clark will briefly review material from the first seminar including basic Obedience, Collar Conditioning, Force Fetch and Force to the Pile. He will work with attending dogs and handlers to see if their retriever is finished with the basic foundations training so you know if you are ready to move on to the next level. If you didn't make it to the first class, don't worry! Be sure to come for this one!
Once the review is completed, Clark will move on to demonstrate more advanced training designed to get your retriever handling on blinds. During this time, you will learn 3 Handed Casting, T, Conditional Casting, 3 and 5 Legged Pattern Blinds and Diversion Field. Clark will show you how to teach your retriever, then train the concept so that your dog will be successful. He will also show effective ways to reinforce the training along the way.
Sunday's material will focus on water work including Water T and Swim Bye if water temperatures are warm enough. If not, Clark will discuss bird placement and how to use if effectively with different levels of dogs. This will include discussing what influences the difficulty of a mark or blind in the field.
The material covered in the first two classes are the basics needed to have a Seasoned level hunting retriever. Whether you intend to run Hunt Tests or if you want an hunting companion that can complete blind retrieves, dogs that complete the steps in this training program are sure to be a joy to compete with and hunt with. The third session will begin to transition the basic training into more advanced training that a Finished level hunting retriever is expected to have.
Bring a notepad, a chair and be ready to take home some valuable lessons to work on with your retriever. Feel free to bring your hunting retriever with you too! As time allows, Clark will demonstrate these concepts with dogs at this level so be sure to bring your hunting buddy!
